Max Gray-Barquero Obituary

With profound sadness in our hearts, we announce our son, brother, stepbrother, and amor eterno, Max (Maximilian) Gray-Barquero, is resting in peace. Max left us unexpectedly on November 1, 2021.

Max was born in Somerville and grew up in Bernardsville. He is the only child to mother, Laura Gray of Bernardsville, NJ and father, Javier Barquero of Perth Amboy, NJ. Besides his parents, Max leaves behind his mother’s partner, Luis Rojas; half brother, Jean Paul Barquero; step siblings, Brianna Rojas, Christian Rojas, and Valeria Carrion, Jose Carrion, and many other loving family members and friends.

Although only 19 at the time of his passing, Max affected many people during his time here with us. He was a fiercely loyal friend and companion, a committed athlete and teammate, and a devoted son.

At a very young age, Max found his life’s passion in the blank pages of his mom’s printer paper and his Crayola kit. His love for art grew with every sketch, drawing, and painting he did, leading him to pursue a Graphic Design and Animation Studies degree at Rowan University. His sketchbooks and iPad were filled with countless art pieces and works in progress. He was an aspiring illustrator and animator who was constantly expanding his skills especially in comics, cartoons, and anime.

Max is a graduate of Bernards High School in Bernardsville, NJ, where he shined on the football field as a wide receiver and linebacker, being awarded the game ball on November 1, 2019. As a captain his senior year, Max was nominated for the Heart of a Giant award for his tremendous work ethic and dedication to his team.

He was a brilliant soul, emitting his warmth to all those around him and spreading his never-ending joy. He impacted the lives of all those whose hearts he touched. He was a true jokester with a heart of gold and his infectious smile lit up any room he was in.

A candlelight vigil will begin on Saturday, November 6 at dusk (5:30 pm) at the Bernardsville Polo Grounds. All who wish to celebrate Max are welcome.

Cuoco Funeral and Cremation Services has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 7, 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Mary, Mother of God Roman Catholic Church, located at 157 S Triangle Rd, Hillsborough Township, NJ 08844. Refreshments will be provided.
